I was looking through Craigslist while living on Maui and to my eternal delight and surprise I saw the heading “Instrument Grade Curly Koa for sale”. Instrument grade is 2-3% of harvest… and it is rarely for sale. Koa only grows in Hawaii and there is intense international competition to buy it. I called the number seven times in seven days and got my chance, and spent all I thought I could afford, and then some. If I had seen clearly that I would never get the chance again, I would have taken out a loan for several thousand dollars more than what I did spend that day.
Cutting into a new board, I sprayed a little water over it, and hissed… Shazam! This wood has a unique character, my friend called it chatoyance, that glimmers like no other. Each time I look at it in good light I am mesmerized.
